Open House/First Day of School (Proulx)

HAPPY LABOR DAY WEEKEND!

Dear 5th grade Parents and students,
I am very excited to begin this school  year, and I know that you must be very excited as well.  There are many things that you will be learning, but don’t worry, I am learning right along with you!  There are also wonderful topics you will be introduced to, and you will have opportunities to grow, progress, and work you way to new learning.  One of the jobs that you will have, is to pay close attention to the things that help you learn (your learning style), and to be aware of your strengths.  One of my jobs is to do the same thing; I will pay close attention to your learning style, and to your strengths.  Then I will try very hard to include the things I learn about you and your learning style, into each lesson.  Remember, school is for exploration, trying out new things, being able to fail and start over, grow, and to succeed.  We will be doing these things together.  You won’t know everything when you get here—THAT IS WHY YOU ARE IN SCHOOL!  ☺  You are in school to learn, so relax and get ready for a GREAT YEAR!
Note to Parents:
Brief introduction of myself:  I was born in Tucson, Arizona and lived there until 2010 (when my husband and I moved to Portland, Oregon).  I have been a teacher for going on 19 years. This will be my 6th year teaching at WHCS.  Most of my teaching career has been in Christian education, and I am glad to partner with you in educating your children in not only “reading, writing, and math,’’ but also in their knowledge of Christ, and their relationship with Him.
I look forward to working together with you, getting to know you and your children, and I believe they are ready to learn, grow, and enjoy the 5th grade!

This year's theme verse is Psalm 18:30 As for God, his way is perfect:The Lord’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in him.
In Christ’s love and service,
Mrs. Sylvia Proulx
WHCS 5th Grade

To get you started, I am including information concerning items you will need when you come on Tuesday, and how I would like you to store them.  You should have all of your supplies--however, to get started, the following list of items can be organized before you come to class, which will help your first school day go more smoothly.
Zippered pouch with the following items ready to use:
2-4 sharpened pencils,; 2 blue or black pens; 1 highlighter; 1-2 red pens; eraser; 1 dry erase pen; 1 fine tipped sharpie (permanent); one broad tipped sharpie (permanent).
Your books and accordion folder/binder (and folders), should be left on top of your desk during Open House.
The assignment notebook is a mandatory item.  Your child will automatically receive it on the first day, you do not need to order it.

Other items:
These items will be placed in an art box:  Colored pencils, scissors, felt tipped pens, extra pens and pencils, erasers, highlighters, sharpies, 3x5 cards (if you have them). No personal items such as toys, misc. papers, etc. are allowed to be stored in your desk or art box.
Community supply drawers: packages of school paper, glue sticks and tape.
Any remaining items will be put into your locker for safe-keeping until you need to bring them into the room.  You may want to have a pencil box, or bag for organization and easy storage in your locker.
Teachers have noticed that when students bring pencil sharpeners, wood shavings end up in desks and on the carpet (which is difficult to clean up).  Therefore students are asked to NOT bring in personal pencil sharpeners.  Thank you.
Your locker is school property and must be respected.  NO TAPE, or stickers, are allowed to be used to secure items to the sides (insides or outsides), of the locker.  You may use magnets, or locker organizers.

REMEMBER TO PRACTICE USING YOUR COMBINATION LOCKS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE YOU COME TO SCHOOL.  OPEN THEM, CLOSE THEM, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE!  ☺  You’ll be an expert by the first day of school (and much happier)!

Finally, no personal items are allowed in the classroom/desk.
